Twenty-ninth Wednesday in Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“Present yourselves to God as raised from the dead to life and the parts of your bodies to God as weapons for righteousness.”  (Romans 6: 13)

How should we live this Word? image078- worship

The passage from misery to salvation is seen by Paul also as the passage from the old person to the new person.  If the first law allowed only a limited expression of solidarity in evil, now the reign of grace allows us to experience new languages and new harmonies.  Cult is no longer an exterior action, made of formulas, rites, money for visible offerings that can be concretized in objects or animals.

The new person finds the body as the place of offering and of cult.  Here there is the anticipation of what will be more fully developed in Chapter 12, in the letter’s exhortations.  The parts of our body, our words, and our gestures recognize the glory and the love of God and express them, restoring them to the acknowledgment of others.

With our body and with all that our body permits us to do, we give glory to God.  Our work, relationships, care, affection, being young or old, being well or ill, all become the altar on which to celebrate salvation.

Today in my time of silent contemplation, I will reflect on these words and thank God for the possibility of being the altar on which to worship Him.

Lord, let nothing in this day seem banal to me.  Grant that everything may help me to know You and Your love that is strength in me and that is salvation and eternal life.

The Voice of Psalm 123

We have been freed like a bird from the fowler’s snare.

The snare has been broken and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.
