SOLEMNITY of SAINTS PETER & PAUL

From the Word of the Day

“Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

(Matthew 16: 16)

How should we live this Word?PETERPAUL-ICON2-4IN-750420[1]

Today the Church celebrates two persons who were vastly different from each other.  However they were identical in the power of a faith burning with love and with which they handed themselves over to Christ Jesus.  By doing this, they became the foundation stones of the new Church.

It is important to note that both Peter and Paul had fallen into sin.  Out of fear, Peter had denied Christ on the night of His Passion.  Paul, because he was persuaded of his own uprightness in observing the Law, had detoured from the true spiritual journey, which is growing in love of God and of our neighbour.  This growth occurs when we are aware of our spiritual poverty and of our great, continual need of God’s grace to sustain us in the active will to love.

This is the condition for our eyes to be opened and our heart illumined so that we may discover in Jesus “the Son of the living God”, our Saviour.

Today in my time of contemplation, I will repeat with love and lively faith, “Jesus, You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God!

Lord, I too have fallen into sin like Peter and Paul.  I too have known darkness, meaninglessness, distance from You, all caused by my sins.  Now I want to be like Peter and Paul, firmly attached to You, walking in Your Light and Truth, living Your Word.  Grant to me and all those who are Friends and Servants of Your Word, a persevering will and courage to listen to Your Word, pray it, and live it.

The Voice of Pope Francis

Apostolic courage is sowing.  It is sowing the Word.  It is handing it to the men and women for whom it was given.  Give them the beauty of the Gospel, the awe of an encounter with Jesus, and let the Holy Spirit do the rest.
