Eighth Saturday in Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“I sought Wisdom openly in my prayer…I directed my soul to her, and in cleanness I attained to her.”

(Sirach 51:17-27)

How should we live this Word? image047- creation

The author of Sirach affirms something that regards a very important experience.  Wisdom is obtainable if we pray.  Wisdom should not be confused with an accumulation of scientific and erudite concepts pertaining to human knowledge.  Wisdom has other origins and another consistency.  It flows from God. Those who humbly ask for her in prayer and with a pure heart can obtain her.

This does not mean that an educated person, a scientist, an author, a researcher of whatever field, a professor are excluded from this gift of the Holy Spirit.  Certainly not!  What is important is purity of heart, the interior reality ever on a journey of conversion to obtain Wisdom from God.

Wisdom can be obtained by a person who seeks to live simply, in conformity with God’s will.  This is so necessary, especially today, when many distance themselves from God and fall into foolishness and even criminal depravity.

Today in my time of contemplation, I will humbly ask God for His gift of Wisdom to guide all my choices and actions.

Lord, give me Your Holy Spirit!  Lord, give me the gift of Wisdom from the Spirit, and make me a person capable of always choosing the good, the true, and the beautiful.  Lord, give me a pure heart, freed from all that is not You.

The earth holds the resources to answer many urgent needs.  However, we must put our study, our research, our intelligence, our culture, all these good things, at the service of others and not for our own avidity.
