HOLY SATURDAY

From the Word of the Day

“Jesus, seeing His Mother and the disciple whom He loved beside her, said to His Mother, ‘Woman, behold your son!’  Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold your mother!’.”

             (John 19: 26-27)

How should we live this Word?Pietà

As we remain under the cross with our gaze fixed on Jesus Crucified, we also listen to His words.  Turning to Mary and the disciple beside Her, and every disciple at Her side, His words sink into our heart.  In the silence of this day, let us receive those words and meditate on them in our heart, as Mary did throughout her life, right from the first moment when She became the Mother of God.

Now She is our Mother also, the Mother of the Church.  We are in Her heart and we can learn from Her what it means to believe against all evidence, to hope against all hope, to love to the end.  As we vigil with Jesus lying in the tomb, we can renew our hope and our faith in His resurrection and our effort to become a living sign of the presence of the risen Lord in today’s world.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will vigil with Mary in hope and expectancy for the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to be with us always.

Mother of the living, faithful Virgin, give us the joy of believing with You.

The Voice of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini in The Madonna of Holy Saturday

O Mary, in Your holy Saturday, You are the icon of the Church, of love, sustained by a faith stronger than death and alive in charity that overcomes all abandonment.  O Mary, obtain for us the deep consolation that allows us to love even in the night of faith and of hope and when we no longer seem to see even the face of our brother!
