Thursday after Ash Wednesday

From the Word of the Day

“Choose life that you and your descendants may live, by loving the Lord, your “God, heeding his voice, and holding fast to him.”

(Deuteronomy 30:  15-20)

How should we live this Word image047- creation

The invitation to fasting and penance that was addressed to us yesterday as we began the sacred time of Lent is interwoven today with the joyful invitation to choose life, a full life that God has prepared for us if we but follow His way, the way of His Commandments.  The humble confession of our sins throws us into the Father’s embrace and He will clothe us once again in our nuptial garments and put a ring on our finger.

This is Lent, a time to return to ourselves, to take stock of the distance we have taken from our Father’s home, or, having remained in it, how we perhaps have lived like demanding children rather than united with our God.

This is the time to wake from sleep, to raise our head and listen to the silent call of the One who urges us to full self-realization according to the name given to us, child of God in the image of Jesus, the first-born.

There is no place for sadness or passivity, living days that are empty of meaning.  A voice announces the Lord’s return in Zion, the holy city, with His gifts of peace, salvation, freedom.  Yes, God is at the doors of the city, our soul sanctified by the presence of the Holy Spirit.  He awaits our response made of humble and simple gestures that set the pace of our days.  We need do nothing spectacular, but all becomes so if done with love.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will renew my determination to live this Lent walking with the Lord as I take in hand my resolutions made yesterday and continue to live them lovingly.

I exalt with joy, Lord, at the thought that You are at the door of my heart with Your gift of peace to slake the thirst of my poor heart.  Thank You, my God!

The Voice of Abbe’ Pierre, Witness

God is joy!  Throughout this day which you have fatigued to live for others, to serve the poorest, God manifests Himself and lets you savor His joy.  Even if you do not know Him, through a gesture of charity and of love, you will meet Him, you will know God.
