Third Friday of Advent

From the Word of the Day

“O Rising Daystar, splendor of light eternal and shining sun of justice, O come, and light with your radiance those who in darkness dwell and linger in death’s shadow!”

(O Antiphon Day Six)

How should we live this Word 051508_lead_new[1]

This invocation is the shortest of the major antiphons.  We call upon the Savior as Daystar, light eternal, shining sun of justice.  The titles come from various passages of the Old Testament, which are amply confirmed in the New Testament.  We also recall that December 21 is the winter solstice, the date around which the birth of Jesus is calculated.  He will be a true King and wise, the reflection of eternal light, spotless revelation of God’s action and the image of His goodness for those who fear Him.  On them will rise the beneficent rays of the sun of justice.

Luke tells us that this sun will shine on those in darkness and in the shadow of death.  (Cf Luke 1: 78-79)  Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, exclaims at the birth of his son that he will be the prophet of the Most High because he will go before Him to prepare the way.  The child leapt for joy in his mother’s womb when the greeting of the Lord’s Mother reached him.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will exult for joy because Jesus the Light comes into our dark world, leading it into His Light.  I will rejoice and be glad!

“Come, Lord Jesus, come!  Come to illumine our hearts!

The Voice of St. Cyril of Alexandria, Church Father

Behold the joy of the whole universe.  Let the union of God and man in the Son of the Virgin Mary fill us with awe and adoration!
