Eleventh Saturday of Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“No one can serve two masters.”

  (Matthew  6:24  )

How should we live this Word

Jesus’ words help us to be fully men and women in the today of our world.  It speaks of the need to make clear choices and decisions, without hesitations and convenient concessions.  Further on, the Lord specifies an inescapable and salvific truth, “No one can serve two masters…You cannot serve God and mammon.”  Well we know that mammon signifies money and things, wealth, when they become idols and objects of great preoccupation.  Then they suck the life out of us and gradually destroy us as persons.

True life is service.  Then we can experience and say with St. Elizabeth of Hungry, ‘To serve God is to reign.’  Or else we can become servants and slaves of material things, of money, and even of persons, as objects of idolatry.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will consider if I am serving God or ‘mammon’.  Where is my heart’s treasure?  I must make a choice because I cannot serve both, and with God’s help, I will choose God.

My God, You have created me to be free and have redeemed me in Jesus because of Your ineffable love.  Help me to experience Your Lordship in my life.  Enable me to dance with You through life, singing and celebrating my life and offering it to You, the Father who has created me!
