Fourth Monday of Advent

From the Word of the Day

“But now you will be speechless and unable to talk until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”

                                          Luke 1: 20

How should we live this Word

Yesterday’s Liturgy announced the Savior of the world and today’s announces His precursor.  Mary believed the Angel Gabriel’s words but Zechariah doubts.  He reasons that he is now old and even his wife is advanced in age and sterile.  However, true faith does not put limits on God.  It requires the awareness and the freedom of the creature for full collaboration in God’s plan.  Mary’s question to the Angel did not proceed from doubt.  She asked for a clarification for her total adhesion to God’s will.  “Blessed is she who believed that the Lord’s word would be fulfilled.”  This is Elizabeth’s cry when she meets Mary.  “Nothing is impossible for God.”  God fulfills what He promises in us as well.  He accomplishes great things when we know how to trust His word.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will reflect on these two figures, Zechariah and Mary.  I will ask them to illumine me on the importance of God’s word for my life and the need to receive it and render it fruitful because it is of God.  Perhaps I often find myself closer to Zechariah’s reaction but the point of arrival is that of Mary who, through her faith, became God’s dwelling place.

Lord, grant me a simple and trustful heart that seeks to receive Your Word with joy.  Your word in the prophets and in John the Baptist brings me closer to the ultimate Word who is Jesus.  Come Lord Jesus, Savior!

The voice of St. Augustine, Theologian

Can it be that You will not pity us, You who became human for us?  Great are Your marvels, greater still are Your promises.  Your works make us seek the goods they promise us.
