Thirty Fourth Wednesday of Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“It will lead to your giving testimony…By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”

                                  Luke 21: 13/19

How should we live this Word

‘The disciple is not greater than the Teacher,’ Jesus said in another context.  (Matthew 10: 24)  In today’s Gospel, He explains that the disciples will be handed over to their adversaries, suffer persecutions, and even die for the name of Jesus.  However, He affirms, ‘Not a hair on our head will be destroyed.’

Just as Jesus had to suffer death on the cross so that we could rise to the fullness of life, so too the disciples’ perseverance in suffering with Jesus will blossom in the resurrection and in the joy of the eternal nuptials in the Kingdom of Heaven.  Salvation is realized through the cross.  This gives the disciple who loves, the occasion to identify with Jesus in giving credible witness to our world, thirsty for hope.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will reflect on my capacity to persevere in giving witness to Jesus even when the cross is very heavy.  Jesus assures me of His presence in difficulties but I must trust Him.

Lord Jesus, I like a comfortable life without problems but this does not exist.  Help me to face the reality of each day with You and thus be an authentic witness and also help to lighten the cross of my sisters and brothers.  Amen!

For Christians, suffering is above all a visit from God.  It is a sure visit because He knows that it is a privation of this world and, not containing anything of the world, cannot but hide God.
