Twenty Sixth Friday of Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.”

Luke 10: 13

How should we live this Word

Today’s Gospel continues the theme of the mission of the seventy two disciples. This arduous and difficult mission could result in the refusal of Jesus and His message of salvation. “Woe to you!” This is not a condemnation but rather a cry from our merciful Lord who aches because of the refusal of human beings. In comparing the privileged presence and word of Jesus in Bethsaida and Chorazin to the cities of Tyre and Sidon, considered synonymous with all that is evil, Jesus wants them to understand the enormity of their sin. It goes beyond just a material act. It is the blindness of persons, closed to the truth, trivializing human dignity and freedom, to the point of excluding God from their lives. We hear God’s impassioned cry of limitless love that wants to reach the ears and the hearts of every woman and man with words of eternal life. Everyone is offered the opportunity of choosing God. ‘Whoever listens to You, listens to Me. Whoever despises You, despises Me. Those who despise me, also despise the One who sent Me.’

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will give an account of the refusal that harms me, and takes away my heritage acquired by Jesus Christ. What a tremendous responsibility it is to refuse the Love that created my being, my life!

Lord Jesus, I want to be an effective announcer of Your Gospel of salvation for all those who touch my life. Help us all to approach Your Word with hearts that are humble, free, and welcoming.

The voice of Henri Nouwen

The house is the center of my being where I hear the voice saying, ‘You are my beloved son,’ the same voice that gave life to the first Adam and spoke to Jesus, the second Adam. It is the uninterrupted voice of love that speaks from eternity, bestowing life and love. Every time that voice is listened to, I know I am at home with God and I have nothing to fear.
