Twenty Third Wednesday of Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“Brothers and sister, if you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.  Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.  For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.”

                    Colossians 3: 1-11

How should we live this Word

Paul is addressing the Colossians who have sincerely received the Christ of faith thus becoming members of the Church, His Mystical Body.  Therefore a ‘resurrection’ occurred.  Christ rose from physical death.  The believers, to whom the letter is addressed, have risen to a new style of life.  To live Christ means to belong to Him and therefore to ‘die’ and ‘rise’ in that METANOIA (conversion) directed to a totally new heart and mind in respect to the pseudo values that abound and are sought in a worldly climate.

When Paul says to ‘seek’ and to ‘think’ in synchrony with the risen Christ and not be preoccupied with the things ‘of earth’, he is not proposing a disincarnated faith.  He does not mean that all those things which embody human life in this world like providing for a healthy existence, honestly enjoying the goods of the earth, should be banished or looked upon with suspicion.  Certainly not!

We rise with Jesus if we die to that which on this earth is avidity, closure, violence, the refusal to love.  We rise with Jesus if we learn to think like Him, orienting our life in desires, thoughts, and actions according to what God wants and that has been made very clear to us through the Commandments and Jesus’ Gospel.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will recognize that some of my desires and behaviors are very earthy, that they enslave me, and are far from giving me peace.  By dying to them, I can unburden myself and enter now into that life that is ‘hidden with Christ in God’ but that will be even for me, a happy participation in His glory.

Lord Jesus, obtain for me the Holy Spirit that He may enable me to desire, think, want, and act like you.  Thank You, my Lord!

The voice of Pope Paul VI

Conversion is the goal of our ministry.  It is to awaken to the awareness of sin in its perennial and tragic reality, the awareness of its personal and social dimensions together with the certainty that ‘grace has over-abounded where there is sin.’  (Romans 5:20)  It is to proclaim salvation in Jesus Christ
