Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist

“HEROD WAS THE ONE WHO HAD JOHN THE BAPTIST ARRESTED AND BOUND IN PRISON.”

  (Mark6:  17-29)

John, a voice crying out,

“Prepare the way of the Lord!”

Faithfully mindful of his task

Announcing the One coming,

Ceding his place, his fame, his following

In joyful acknowledgement of the Bridegroom.

Willingly accepting his decrease,

That theChristmight increase.

From whence your humility,John,

Your acceptance to be less?

What, the source of your courage

To speak out the Truth?

How embrace your suffering,

Your death for the blest Name?

Grace, all grace, given you from that first quickening,

When the Christ and His Mother came.

So incisive as to continue in your life

To the moment of supreme sacrifice!

And we, more fortunate,

Have the Christ-paradigm

Rendering all suffering and even death,

Fraught with meaning and redemption.

His Passion urges us to follow.

The painful, bloody steps beckon,

Instilling hope and love,

Bestowing value on our Cross.

Martyrdom’s ‘folly’ becomes wisdom,

When lived with Christ and His saints!
