From the Word of the Day

Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.

                                John 6: 57

How should we live this Word

In His marvelous discourse on the Living Bread, Jesus proclaims that He Himself is the living Bread come down from heaven.  This bread is substantially His own flesh handed over to death on the cross so that we could have endless life.  Then He stresses a very important truth with the term ‘remain’, very dear to John the evangelist.

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.”  By spiritually ‘feeding’ on the Eucharist, we live our day profoundly united toJesusin fullness of life.  The giver of life is the Father.  ‘Just as the living Father sent  Jesus and He has life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Him will have life because of Him.’  Those who are nourished by the Eucharistic Jesus live Him and act in function of Him.

The repetition of the word ‘spiritually’ is intentional and bespeaks an immense divine power capable of transforming our life.  If the Eucharist nourishes us spiritually, we not only overcome temptations, it allows us to sow divine seeds from wherever we live and work.  They are seeds of eternity sown in what is already passing and may be of little value in itself.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will reflect on my attitude toward the Eucharist.  Has it become a habit to which I give little thought?  I will ask Jesus to renew my appreciation of this great gift of His Body and Blood given to me each day.

Lord, grant that I may nourish myself on Your living Bread in the Eucharist and live in Your joy, spreading it around me.

The voice of Mother Maria Candida of the Eucharist, Carmelite

Eucharistic souls not only live of the Eucharistic Jesus received daily at Mass, but they endeavor to keep their thoughts and affections before the Eucharistic throne continually!  They also seek to imbue all their actions with the virtues of the Sacred Host.
