Fifth Friday of Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

God knows well that the moment you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is evil.

                                                                                                Genesis 3: 5

How should we live this Word

A disturbing element introduces itself into the harmony of the cosmos begun at creation.  It is diffidence in the human heart through the subtle insinuation of the evil one.  God’s word is not to be trusted.  The temptation is alluring, ‘you will be like gods’ arbitrarily deciding what is good and what is evil.  You will no longer be subject to God’s sovereignty.  Why should you remain in a situation of dependency proper to a creature?  Why not substitute yourself for God?

Thus a corrosive principle of disorder was introduced into the marvelous harmony that ruled the entire universe.  The equilibrium was fragmented.  Humans were no longer God’s partners.  They now found they were in conflict with themselves and with each other.  Nature itself that was subject to them by the divine goodness now becomes an enemy and turns against them.

These are the wages of sin.  A process of degradation and death has been unleashed and no one can escape it.  This evil is not limited to the beginnings of history.  We too experience this evil each day.  The evil corrodes social institutions, families, persons, and even this stupendous universe.

Today as I pause for silent contemplation, I will reflect on the social and cosmic effects of my deviations.  How can I continue to say, ‘Where’s the harm?’

Lord, help me to understand the destructive power of every moral disorder and help me to tend to the good with all my strength.

The voice of Gandhi, Advocate of Non-Violence

In all humility, I try to be good, a lover of the true, the honest, the pure…I seek to always see the good in my neighbour… and to be a brother to all my sisters and brothers.
