From the Word of the Day
I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received; that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…
1 Corinthians 15: 3-4
Paul has received precious gold and wants to transmit it to others. It deals with the central truth of our Christian essence: the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Herein is the motive of that faith which Paul calls ‘the victory that conquers the world’ and he further states, ‘Christ loved me and gave Himself for me’ (Gal 2, 20). The profound meaning of His passion and death directly touches my personal story. It proceeds with the condition that removes all hesitation, ‘If Christ had not risen, vain would be our faith.’ In this argument concerning the resurrection, Paul is quick to name the eye witnesses, those to whom Jesus appeared, adding “to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living.”
Today as I pause for silent contemplation, I will be grateful for the power, the light, and the explosive content of truth that the Sacred Scriptures contain. I will ask for the grace to persevere in daily listening to the Word, light to my steps and strength for the journey.
Open my heart Lord, to Your Word!
The voice of St. Jerome, Father of the Church
If as the Apostle says, Christ is the power and the wisdom of God, those who do not know the Scriptures, do not know the power of God or His wisdom. To ignore Scripture is to ignore Christ.
