BLESSED TRINITY SUNDAY

From the Word of the Day

Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

Romans 5: 5

How should we live this Word

Christian hope is a theological virtue and together with faith and charity, forms the intimate dynamism of the Christian. It is neither a superficial optimism nor a vague sensation that all is well. Hope is like the light when the sun rises on the horizon. The light exists because of the sun. Hope comes from the power of love that God pours out on us in Baptism. In fact, it is in the depths of our heart that the Holy Spirit, Love itself, produces hope. This is why St. Paul says that Christian hope cannot disappoint us.

Through hope, we cling to God in the certainty that He is present in us and near us as our true Good, our only true Good that will never abandon us to the destructive forces of evil. Jesus told us that the Holy Spirit ‘will lead us to the entire truth’. The whole truth is that we are infinitely loved by God. He loved us so much that He gave us His Son Jesus who with His death on the cross paid our ransom from the evil of sin. Thus our days are in the embrace of the Holy Trinity, the feast we celebrate today. Hope is this certainty the Holy Spirit whispers in our heart, that the Father sent His only Son into the world, ‘not to judge it but to save it’.

Today as I pause for silent contemplation, I will take a longer time to reflect on ‘the hope that does not disappoint’.

My God, adored Trinity, grasp me always more and more in the depths of Your essence as Love that saves. Grant that in this Love, I may breathe hope for myself and for the entire world.

The voice of Ephraim the Syrian, Church FatherReceive the life from Majesty but do not question this Majesty. Love the goodness of the Father but do not examine His essence. Love and appreciate the meekness of the Son but do not investigate His generation. Love the breath of the Holy Spirit but do not attempt to scan it. Their union is not confusion. Their distinction is not separation. The way in which they are distinct and united, only They know. Take refuge in silence!
