Sixth Tuesday of Easter

From the Word of the Day

“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”  And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you and your household will be saved.”  So they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his house.  He took them in at that hour of the night and bathed their wounds; then he and all his family were baptized at once.  He brought then up into his house and provided a meal and with his household rejoiced at having come to faith in God.

                                               Acts 16: 14

How should we live this Word

Paul and Silas are in prison because of Jesus’ Word that they had proclaimed in Philippi, a city of Macedonia.  They are God’s voice.  The Lord could not abandon them while He is using them to make the word of life reach a multitude of people.  “About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, there was suddenly such a severe earthquake that the foundations of the jail shook.”  The jailers panicked.  One of them, fearing that the prisoners had fled because all the doors were open, was about to kill himself.  Paul intervenes and reassures him.  All the Christian prisoners are still present.  Obviously God is on their side and this moves the jailer to ask, “What must I do to be saved?”

The response is immediate.  “Believe in the Lord Jesus.”  Paul and Silas proclaim the word of life.  The jailer’s house now resounds with joyful song.  After having bathed their wounds, he and his household were all baptized.  Then they sat down to eat together.  What is most evident is the climate of joy that pervades this place of hospitality and charity, so simple and vital.

Today as I pause for silent contemplation, I will renew the certainty that if I live my faith without compromise and fear, God will not abandon me in whatever situation I find myself.  I will root myself in the reality that if I let Jesus and His Gospel enter into my home, I will open the door to joy.

Lord, help me to be a happy believer of Your Word that I want to welcome and live each day.

To be a window, a place of communication and encounter where light may pass to communicate that which we hold most dear and receive what others have most dear.
