Feast of the Presentation of Mary

From the Word of the Day

Looking at those sitting in a circle around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers.  Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.’

                                       Mark 3: 34-35

How should we live this Word

Today’s Gospel asks us a hidden question.  What does it mean to be part of Jesus’ family?  We find the answer in the life of His Mother, Mary.  She was just a simple girl when the Angel Gabriel communicated to her the news that would radically change her whole existence.  ‘The Lord is with you…you have found favor with God…you will conceive a Son…you will give birth to Him and you will call Him Jesus…Son of the Most High…His reign will never end’.

From the beginning of her life, Mary enjoyed a special friendship with God.  She was open to Him and desired to do His will with her whole heart.  Notwithstanding the seriousness of the moment and the grandeur of the proposal that certainly surpassed all her human plans, she said ‘yes’ and received Emanuel, God with us, in her womb.  From that instant Mary, as every mother, followed the events of the life of her Son, often in darkness and without understanding.  It was a life of waiting that always brought her beyond her strength to an unknown future, yet fully accepted with faith and love.

Mary was with Him from His birth to His death on the cross.  She tasted His moments of joy and suffered with Him the tragic moments of His passion as only a mother can suffer, but always with the confidence that she was in God’s hands.  The disciple should be like Mary in order to be part of God’s family.

Today as I pause for silent contemplation, I will confront my life of faith with that of Mary.  Am I capable of receiving God and communicating with Him inside of me?  Do I seek to do His will even without  totally understanding the consequences, even when I must renounce my plans or when it leads to misunderstanding?

O Mary, the Lord is with you!  Help me to receive your Son and do the Father’s will, day by day for the good of God’s entire family.

The voice of Ermes Ronchi, witness

Who is my mother; who are my sisters and brothers?  Jesus intended to extend to all His disciples family rapport of trust, of tenderness, of reciprocity, not generated by blood or flesh, but by God.  The Church begins, the first cell, in the gift of reciprocal hospitality.
