Twenty Fifth Saturday of Ordinary Time

Cross 1From the Word of the Day

Pay attention to what I am telling you.

The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.

  (Luke 9, 43b-45)

How should we live this Word

In the first reading, the prophet Zechariah announces a stupendous oracle, “I will be the glory in her midst.”  This oracle has its climax in Jesus.  Through His incarnation, He came among us to share our life in all its dimensions except sin.  Then, in full obedience to the Father’s plan, He made us participants in His divine life.

In yesterday’s Gospel, Jesus sought to open His disciples’ mind to His passion and today He stresses this even more.  “Pay attention to what I am telling you.  The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.”  But the disciples do not understand.  It seems an absurdity to them.  Even today, with all the help that comes from the Church, studies, books, the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ that is by now an uncontested event, these words are still unexplainable because they deal with the secret of God’s Mercy that goes beyond our human capacity.  The light of Easter must make inroads in our mind and heart so that we may reach communion of life with God.

Today as I pause for silent contemplation, I will seek to say with Jesus, listening to His Word and seeking to remain in communion with Him.  Then perhaps, I too will have an experience similar to the disciples of Emmaus, ‘In that moment their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus’ (Luke 24, 13-35).

My God, I adore You!  Grant that I may always recognize You in the Word and in the Bread that is broken.

The voice of P. G. Cabra, Theologian

It is certain that in the definitive state, we will no longer live in isolation but in a festive and gratifying communion.  This communion will be extraordinary first with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Then it will be with the multitude of saints, with the community of the saved, with the gratifying company of humanity of all times.
