Twenty Fifth Tuesday of Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.

                                                                                                (Luke 8, 19)

How should we live this Word

Today’s Gospel presents us with Jesus’ Mother and His relatives who arrive while He is teaching the crowd.  Jesus takes this occasion to widen the concept of ‘family’.  The disciples tell Him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see You”.  Jesus does not answer the statement directly but makes an ulterior reflection.  “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it”.  The new people of God, Christ’s family, are not united by blood ties but by faith.  In order to live in this new family with integrity, one must ‘hear the word of God and act on it’.  They must live it in the concrete situations of daily life, as Mary did.  She was a woman of faith, of reflection, of action.  The emphasis on the connection between word and life is essential for an authentic Christian life.crowds

Jesus does not limit Himself to a merely theological explanation.  He who is the Word, demonstrates how to live by His very Person, in the style of the Beatitudes.  It is a fully human life, lived in intimacy with God in the heart of the Christian family.  As we grow in our relationship with Jesus, with the assistance of Lectio Divina and the Eucharist, we will find our concept of family widening until it embraces the universe!  With God, there are no limits and no outsiders.

Today as I pause for silent contemplation, I will consider my belonging to Christ’s family.  Do I really listen to God’s Word and act on it?  Are my faith and my love only sentiments and good desires?  Or are they instead, really lived in action and in my witness for others.

Lord Jesus, grant that Your Word may enter into me and nourish me each day.  Grant that my style of life may mirror Your teachings more and more.  I praise You and I thank You because life is a beautiful adventure the more I live intimately with You in the heart of the Christian family.

The voice of Archbishop Dionigi Tettamanzi

A true Christian community establishes relationships with everyone.  It is not argumentative. It knows how to receive new people.  It goes ahead with patience, delicacy, courage, concreteness, and charity.  Thus love spreads and becomes communion.  Love is shared.
