Twenty first Saturday of Ordinary Time

“He liked to listen to him.”   (Mark 6, 17-29)

 John and Herod

Superficial Herod’s listening.

John’s searing words did not penetrate

that closed heart,

impervious to repentance.

The soil, too rocky for the seed.

Do I too hear without listening,

comforted by the reassuring words,

the consoling promises, lulling me?

Am I led to deep-down conversion;

life-changing, vitalizing renewal?

Jesus came to bring the sword, not peace,

Baring the heart,

Uprooting the weeds,

implanting the Seed.

Mine, to receive and nourish

with docile attention and ardent love!
